Missing Money Checklist 2026: 20 Places to Search

Search state portals plus IRS, Treasury, pension, VA, HUD, FDIC and court locators for funds owed to you.

The 2026 missing-money checklist covers state unclaimed-property portals plus separate federal locators for tax refunds, savings bonds, pensions, VA funds, mortgage refunds, court funds and failed-bank deposits. Missing money means dormant financial property held for its owner, not one national payout list. Start with the states, then work through the federal systems one by one. Legitimate searches and claims are free, so use official .gov portals and court sites directly.

What should you check first with the states?

State treasurers hold dormant bank accounts, unpaid wages, safe-deposit contents and uncashed checks. Search MissingMoney.com plus each relevant state .gov unclaimed-property portal. Search every state where you lived or worked, under all name variants.

Include maiden names, initials, misspellings and old addresses. The Delaware Office of Unclaimed Property reports its money-match program returned over 1.2 million dollars to Delaware taxpayers, described in the Delaware money-match report. Use this state-search routine:.

  • List each state of residence, work, banking and insurance.
  • Run each state .gov portal as well as MissingMoney.com.
  • Repeat under prior names, initials and common misspellings.
  • File directly with the state holding the property and keep claim numbers.

Which federal money never appears in state databases?

Missing federal tax refunds are not in state databases. Check them separately with the IRS Where's My Refund tool, the refund trace process or Form 3911 for a lost check. Federal refunds generally expire after three years, according to the IRS refund inquiries guidance. Matured, unredeemed U.S.

savings bonds and Treasury securities need a different search. Use TreasuryDirect's Treasury Hunt function by Social Security number or bond serial number, then mail the claim for payment. Money undistributed in federal bankruptcy cases also stays with the courts. Search the U.S. Courts Unclaimed Funds Locator by court and creditor name, then file the claim to that court on Form 1340.

Where do lost retirement and veteran funds sit?

Lost private-sector pensions from ended plans are searchable in the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation unclaimed-pensions database. Search by last name plus the last four digits of the Social Security number. Forgotten 401(k)s have another official route. Check the Labor Department Retirement Savings Lost and Found Database, created under SECURE 2.0.

It helps workers locate retirement accounts left with former employers. Unclaimed VA life-insurance death awards, dividends and premium refunds belong to missing veteran policyholders or beneficiaries. Search the VA Unclaimed Funds database by surname. Group SGLI and VGLI policies are excluded, so check the policy type before searching.

What about housing refunds and failed-bank deposits?

Former FHA-insured mortgage borrowers may be owed mortgage-insurance premium refunds. Search HUD's refund database by last name or FHA case number, then claim through HUD's support center at 1-800-697-6967. Do not pay a finder fee for this claim.

Deposits left at failed banks and liquidated credit unions are listed separately. Use the FDIC unclaimed-funds portal for failed banks and the NCUA unclaimed-deposits pages for liquidated credit unions. USA.gov warns that no single database covers every type, so run both official state and federal searches.
