About Missing Money News

Who We Are

Missing Money News is an independent news and research publication dedicated to helping Americans find and recover unclaimed money, lost assets, and abandoned property. Every year, state treasuries and federal agencies hold billions of dollars in unclaimed funds — from forgotten bank accounts and uncashed checks to life insurance payouts and old utility deposits — and most people have no idea the money exists or that it belongs to them.

Our mission is to close that gap. We publish original reporting, step-by-step claim guides, state-by-state search resources, and investigative stories that expose scams targeting people who are searching for their missing money.

What We Cover

  • Unclaimed property news — new state programs, escheatment law changes, and treasury announcements that affect whether you can recover lost funds
  • How-to claim guides — detailed, state-specific walkthroughs for searching government databases and filing claims at no cost
  • Scam alerts — warnings about fraudulent “asset recovery” firms, phishing schemes, and predatory finder-fee companies that charge excessive fees for information you can get free
  • Consumer protection reporting — coverage of class action settlements, refund programs, and government enforcement actions that put money back in consumers’ pockets
  • Personal finance resources — practical guidance on safeguarding your assets, avoiding dormancy periods, and keeping your accounts from being escheated

Why We Exist

According to the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA), U.S. state treasuries collectively hold more than $80 billion in unclaimed assets. The federal government holds billions more through agencies like the IRS, PBGC, and HUD. An estimated 1 in 10 Americans has unclaimed money waiting for them — yet awareness remains remarkably low.

We started Missing Money News because we believe everyone deserves free, reliable information about how to find and claim what is rightfully theirs. We are not a finder service. We do not charge fees. We do not collect your personal data to sell to third parties. We are journalists and researchers committed to making unclaimed property information accessible to all.
